Glamorous!

For the first time since i've lived in New Mexico, I've had highlights done! And I am soooo pleased! I've been waiting for the right time to have it done for too long. I was tired of my yucky "from a box" color that turns my hair to straw. I was also tired of my very precise, but stubborn hair dresser, Rob, who gives me the same chunky cut regardless of my preferences. He was surly with me last time I visited and I didn't like the cut or attitude.

So... I went with Shakira at Shaggin Cuts and she gave me a wonderful new look. I should have a pic to post, but I'm too lazy. Anyway, I'm very pleased!

Haircut

Since Grandma will be here next week I took Tyoma for his first haircut since Halloween (almost 5 months!!!). Over the summer I had him buzzed pretty regularly, but with his hat aversion, I kept his hair long over the winter months. We went to Snip-its, since the past few haircuts at JC Penney have been a trifle unfortunate.

Alas! I remembered why we went to JCP.

Reminiscent of Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Snip-its  décor featured ultra-vivid colors and swirly, fanciful furniture. The kid-friendly videos they blasted out of their army of tiny suspended television sets even sounded like a hundred singing Ooompa-Loompas. No candy though. I reckon the place is perfect for the status-conscious six year old. Not so much for squirmy 2 1/2 year olds.

I wish you could have seen the look of horror on the stylist's face when I requested the televisions off and a private salon chair so Tyoma could sit on my lap as she cut his hair. Her expression was not quite as dramatically terrified as a person hurtling down the highest peak of a notorious rollercoaster, but it was certainly more appalled than a someone watching Hostel for the first time. Was I really that demanding and bossy? Or maybe other toddlers screamed to wake the dead, and she knew by my wild eyes that this was some serious business?

Anyway, I explained that Tyoma is gifted, but sensitive and that he will quickly get over the haircut process if he is distracted. Poor girl almost dropped her scissors when he stated to squirm, but I reassured her that I would tip generously. I reckon this was all she really needed to hear, because things went swimmingly after that. Spelling colors and numbers, Tyoma even relaxed enough to laugh and smile at her. She gave him a fabulous cut and I hope she will work with us in the future. Yay!

Hair, Glorious Hair!

Well, the driverside window to my car is totally broken. It's been going to hell all summer long. It gives a rubbery moans as you lower the window and then stutters to a halt. It seems to go up just fine, which accounts for the problem. My brain is on auto-pilot and I close the damn window after I open it.

I feel like an idiot running errands to the bank and picking up fast food, having to open the door in my anceint car. Stumbling  out to do my business, people look shocked as if I have made a major social transgression. What kind of person am I to be humiliated by this? Probably the type who was made fun of all through school. Huh.

Today, Rodeyo gave me the loveliest, blondest highlights! But, he was in the pissiest mood evah! Sometime after noon, his inner fabulousness kicked in and I sighed in relief. Despite the crankiness, he tossed me a freebie hairspray and was sweet as pie as I trotted off to my poor sad car.

I felt extra stressed today, anyway. Blah. T minus six days.

Bangs Renewed

Dropped in on Rodeyo today with Tyoma in tow to have my bangs trimmed. The wait was less than a half an hour, but it felt longer with Tyoma along. fortunately, a little boy awaiting a hair cut played with him.

The waif was four years old and so slender that he looked breakable. Tyoma, by contrast, seemed almost as tall, but twice as heavy. I asked the little boy his name and he said "Juice" (Jesus). I was surprised how gently and intelligently Juice played with Tyoma. I made an appointment to have Tyoma's hair cut next week, before his birthday. I am supposed to wait till he is one before the hair cut, but this is close enough.

Bangs!

Being a new mother put me in the mood for a new hairstyle, but I didn’t want to inadvertently convert myself into a soccer mom. So, I went to my stylist Rodeyo and suggested a slightly different hairstyle. He said “Lets do BANGS!” I gasped and almost fell out of his cushy salon chair. What was I to do?!
To help you understand my dilemma, the chronicle of my struggle with bangs follows:
4 ½ years old: I decide I want bangs. I chop off the hair above my forehead, continuing several inches backward to a length of ½ inch, giving myself a spectacularly unlovely reverse-Mohawk.
10 years old: The pretty new girl at school has bangs. I tell my mom I want bangs too. She says bangs are for little girls. I’m too big for bangs. I give my self an unattractive but salvageable hair cut that evening.
15 years old:  The night before a trip to Disneyland with my bff, Jean, we color each other’s hair and give each other bangs. My hair color and bangs look fabulous; Jean is rushed to her mother’s stylist at 8:00 p.m. for emergency reconstruction.
High School : I wear bangs and bleach my hair white throughout high school. In college I decide that bangs are unflattering and give them up entirely (I still bleach the crap out of my hair).

The Melanie Griffith Incident:  Several years ago, I go for a shoulder length cut with bangs. TF spends the next two months pointing out bang-less hairstyles on TV and in magazines, casually mentioning how becoming they would be on me. The real killer is an assessment from my bff, Susan. She tells me that my new hair makes me seem “mature” adding, “You look just like Melanie Griffith.” AAUUUGGGHHH! Needless to say, I swore off bangs for good—until today!
